Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips

Summer is here and it could very well be at its hottest considering the impact of global warming. For certain, air conditioners will be fully utilized in an attempt to lessen the feel of the extreme heat. The worst thing that could happen to your home is finding the air conditioner to be out of order. So how do you keep your air conditioner running trouble free all summer? Easy. With just three simple tips, you may be able to ensure that your cooling system will be working effectively and to the fullest, allowing you to enjoy the season without a sweat.

First, you need to clean or change the air filter. An air conditioning filter is what keeps both air and the unit’s component parts clean. It is usually located over a vent where air comes from or is directly attached to the AC unit itself, depending on the type of system. Clogged filters restrict air flow and greatly reduce the effectiveness of the air conditioner because it will require more energy to perform its function. Moreover, a poorly maintained air filter will decrease the lifespan of the unit, and can hoard dust particles, pollen, mold and other contaminants that can worsen allergies and irritate the eyes respiratory tissues.

Another helpful tip is the proper lubrication of the air conditioner fan. Fan motors are relied upon to blow air through the condenser coils in order to dissipate heat. Thus, fans are usually subjected to adverse conditions such as rain, snow, extreme heat of the sun and stack of dirt and grime. It is very important to properly maintain them in the form of frequent oiling. This usually need to be done by a service technician.

Lastly, always check the freon level of your air conditioner. Low freon level indicates a leak and should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid further damage to other parts such as the evaporator coil and the compressor. This could be very costly.

A thoroughly cleaned air conditioner will naturally operate efficiently. Of course, regular maintenance is far less costly than repair. For homeowners who might opt for a professional to check these things and make sure your air conditioner keeps running, A-1 Ocean Breeze, Inc. is a locally owned and operated air conditioning sales and repair company.

Clockwise or Counterclockwise? That is the question. Well, that will depend on the season and the size of the room you are in. Actually, ceiling fan direction will improve the temperature of your home.

Basically, there’s this fact of nature that air in a certain room settles in layers. The warm on top and the cold at the bottom. Knowing this, you can now control and achieve the temperature that you want, when you need it. Keeping your home cooler (in the summer) and warm er(in the winter) with your ceiling fan can help lower your power or gas bill.

Summer Time:

In the summer months the fan blades should spin “clockwise” on your ceiling fan (this looks counter-clockwise as you are looking up). The air will be directed downward so you should be feeling a downdraft. The air blowing down won’t actually cool the room it will just make it feel cooler, so you should turn the fan off when there are no people (or animals) in the room.

Winter Time:

During cold winter months set your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise (this will look like clockwise if you are looking up from below). This way, the warm air that settles at ceiling (because warm air rises) will now be redirected downward where you are. Take note however that if you have low ceilings you may want to run the fan at a lower speed or else you will cool the warm air as it is pushed downward. In a place with high ceiling like a church for example, you will have to increase the ceiling fan speed for the warm air to reach the targeted space below.

So you see, the ceiling fan direction plays a big role in keeping your home cool or warm. Knowing how to use the ceiling fans properly will really help achieve the comfort and help you save energy and money! If you need to have your air conditioner or heater serviced don’t forget about A-1 Ocean Breeze, we are here to help you any time you need us.

When Should You Replace Air Conditioner Filters?

Air conditioner filters not only capture dust in the air, but also removes allergens such as pollen and molds that could cause health problems. Basically air conditioner filters ensure that you have clean and fresh air in your home or business. Proper cleaning and changing of filters is necessary to ensure the longevity of your air conditioning unit and for a supply of clean air.

The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner and save you money, is to routinely change and replace the filters. Clogged, dirty filters block natural airflow and reduce system efficiency significantly. With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. At A-1 Ocean Breeze, we recommend that you replace your air filters routinely, If your home has pets you may need to change them every 30 to 60 days, the average home should put new air filters in every 90 days.

Some air filters are re-usable, but most must be replaced. Re-usable ones need to be cleaned thoroughly before reinstalled back into the system while replacement air conditioner filters must be disposed off responsibly. Our highly trained technicians can advise you and even replace the air filters for you.

With the increasing number of pollutants in the air most Southern California homes now need high efficiency air conditioner filters to purify their air. Home air conditioner filters range from the inexpensive standard spun glass filters to pricier synthetic polyester fibers. The high efficiency filters can trap tiny particles of dust, pollen, mold and other irritants. Our technicians will determine by your location and even your specific needs and advise you accordingly

It’s a good idea with summer coming to have your air-conditioning unit inspected, there are a number of things that could possibly go wrong after having it sit for so long unused. A quick checkup can save you big money on major repairs down the road. A little preventative maintenance now, could keep your air conditioner running smooth and your home comfortable all summer long.

A-1 Ocean Breeze can be reached toll-free at 877-216-2326.
