How to Set your Ceiling Fan for Summer or Winter

Clockwise or Counterclockwise? That is the question. Well, that will depend on the season and the size of the room you are in. Actually, ceiling fan direction will improve the temperature of your home.

Basically, there’s this fact of nature that air in a certain room settles in layers. The warm on top and the cold at the bottom. Knowing this, you can now control and achieve the temperature that you want, when you need it. Keeping your home cooler (in the summer) and warm er(in the winter) with your ceiling fan can help lower your power or gas bill.

Summer Time:

In the summer months the fan blades should spin “clockwise” on your ceiling fan (this looks counter-clockwise as you are looking up). The air will be directed downward so you should be feeling a downdraft. The air blowing down won’t actually cool the room it will just make it feel cooler, so you should turn the fan off when there are no people (or animals) in the room.

Winter Time:

During cold winter months set your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise (this will look like clockwise if you are looking up from below). This way, the warm air that settles at ceiling (because warm air rises) will now be redirected downward where you are. Take note however that if you have low ceilings you may want to run the fan at a lower speed or else you will cool the warm air as it is pushed downward. In a place with high ceiling like a church for example, you will have to increase the ceiling fan speed for the warm air to reach the targeted space below.
